 JOB SUMMARY
The Communication Officer at Nepal Development Society (NeDS) plays the role of Spokesperson by managing internal and external sources of information by executing the digital media plan, fostering organizational awareness, and engaging the public through social media and the website. S/he in collaboration with the team will develop and implement effective communication strategies aligned with project goals. The Communication Officer will oversee various communication aspects, including internal communications, media relations, events, standardization, compliance, and donor reporting.

 KEY ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Communication Plan and Strategy

  • Develop and implement NeDS communication plans aligned with project objectives in consultation with the project team.
  •  Strategize to enhance organization awareness, public engagement, and social impact of the organization’s works including issues related to Migrants Worker Rights.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager and project team to align communication strategies with project goals.

Branding Guidelines and Standardization:

  • Ensure the organization has branding guidelines, social media uses guidelines, and standardized tools including NeDS’s presentation template, visit cards, banners, roll-ups, letter format, email signature, etc.
  • Provide support to the project team to adhere to branding guidelines and standardization in all communication materials.
  • Liaise with donors to understand their communication needs and align strategies accordingly.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging, branding, and style across all communication materials.

Office Communication

  • Facilitate effective communication within the office across departments, ensuring timely dissemination of information.
  • Coordinate regular team meetings to assess progress, address challenges, and strategize for effective project implementation.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, enhancing communication channels among team members.
  • Contribute to emergency communications during disasters.
  • Serve as a source of information, ensuring the Management Committee is well-informed about project activities and progress.

 

Organization Presence and Advocacy

  • Organize events related to the human rights of migrant workers, and participate in rallies, discussion forums, and advocacy activities.
  • Manage and update social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook) to enhance organizational visibility.
  • Oversee website content, liaising with IT consultants for improvements and regular updates.
  • Coordinate with vendors and IT consultants for efficient website management and technological support.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships to strengthen NeDS’s coordination with government agencies, NGOs, migrant networks, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent NeDS at external meetings, share lessons learned from the organization’s work, and actively participate in relevant forums.
  • Advocate for policy changes and legal reforms addressing the vulnerabilities of migrant workers based on project evidence.

Knowledge Management

  • Implement knowledge management practices for organizational learning, such as program learning meetings, success stories-sharing sessions, experience-sharing sessions, etc.
  • Manage media relations, including communication with journalists and agencies.
  • Serve as the organization’s spokesperson, responding to media inquiries and providing necessary materials for press briefings.

Donor Compliance and Reporting:

  • Ensure compliance with donor reporting requirements and protocols.
  • Prepare, monitor, and report on the annual budget for communication in consultation with the Project Manager.
  • Finalize donor reports on behalf of the Nepal Country team, majorly focusing on donor compliance, standard reporting templates, and requirements.
  • Organize and host support office/donor marketing teams’ visits to project sites.

Office Secretariat Work

  • Support the project team in research training and capacity building for staff, research assistants, and enumerators.
  • Assist in the coordination of fieldwork operations for data collection, ensuring adherence to research protocols.
  • Contribute to research analysis and synthesis of evidence using qualitative software.

Research Works:

  • Oversee secretariat work, ensuring administrative tasks are efficiently managed.
  • Coordinate with the Admin and Logistics Coordinator for smooth office operations.
  • Maintain records, including meeting minutes, memos, and documentation for the management Committee.

General

  • Act as a key member of the organization, providing support across various projects.
  • Undertake tasks as assigned by the line manager, which may include specific programmatic-related assignments or broader organizational responsibilities.
  • Provide communication expertise to strengthen the development of concept notes and proposals for new funding opportunities, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from different departments to ensure effective integration of project objectives across the projects.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team in organizational discussions to refine and enhance overall communication strategies and amplify the organization’s visibility.
  QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Academic Qualification
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
Relevant Experience
  • At least three years of experience years of experience in communication roles.
  • Experience in executing digital media plans and managing social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with website management and content creation.
  • Experience in working with diverse stakeholders, including donors.
  • Knowledge of branding guidelines and communication strategies.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in capacity building, knowledge management, and training programs.
  • Demonstrate diplomacy in building relationships and working with diverse cultures, audiences, sensitive situations, and subject matter.
Essential Attributes
  • Experience in managing working groups consisting of different partners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Creativity in content generation and campaign development including academic/research content publication.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and social media handles.
  • Familiarity with media relations and journalism practices.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in Nepali and English
    language.
  • Honesty, transparent, collaboration, and a learning attitude
Desirable Attributes
  • Master’s degree in Communications or a related field.
  • Prior working experience in research-based projects with
    academic institutions consortium.
  • Familiarity with international and national legal frameworks
    related to human rights and labor rights.
  • Strong knowledge of issues related to migrant workers, labor
    migration, human trafficking, and health and safety issues of
    migrant workers.
  • Prior working experience in research projects and research
    involvement.
  • Experience in organizing external programs and events.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research processes.
  • Skills in graphic design or working with design software.
